Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

The SFI that results from the intellectual property rights is related in that its value could be affected by the research. The SFI that results from the equity interest in a non-publicly traded entity is related in that its value could be affected by the research. The SFI that results from the fiduciary role is related in that it is in an entity whose financial interest could be affected by the research. Upon review by the institution, it was determined that Dr. Della Santina’s SFIs could directly and significantly affect the design, conduct or reporting of his research under this award.
Electrical Stimulation to Restore Three Dimensional Vestibular Sensation
Total loss of vestibular (inner ear balance) sensation causes blurry vision during head movement, chronic dizziness, difficulty walking straight, higher risk of falls and reduced quality of life. There are no good treatment options for people who have lost all balance sensation and fail to improve despite standard medical therapy and rehabilitation exercises. This project will help to develop a device that is similar to cochlear implants (which restore hearing by electrically stimulating the auditory nerve) but is designed to sense head movement and then electrically stimulate the vestibular nerve to help restore balance.
