Conflict of Interest

Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Dr. Patricia Molina is the principal investigator on the above referenced grant application sponsored by the NIH. Dr. Nicholas Gilpin is a co-principal investigator on this project. The goal of this project is to determine whether preventing pathological post-traumatic brain injury (TBI) synaptic plasticity in amygdala prevents post-TBI escalation of alcohol drinking and improves post-TBI outcomes. As required by CM-35, Dr. Gilpin disclosed that he has an equity interest in Glauser Life Sciences, Inc., a company whose business interests are related to this research.

Listed Research Project
Alcohol and Traumatic Brain Injury; Neuronal and Behavioral Consequences

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) produces excessive alcohol drinking in some individuals, and excessive alcohol drinking after TBI aggravates neurobehavioral outcomes and prevents or delays recovery from the injury. It is currently unclear specifically how alcohol further damages the TBI brain, and also how clinicians should manage patients regarding alcohol use after TBI. Determining the mechanisms whereby 1) TBI increases alcohol drinking and 2) alcohol worsens TBI outcomes is critical in establishing guidelines for behavioral and pharmacological interventions post-TBI.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.

Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.

ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
