Conflict of Interest
Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Rhythm Pharmaceuticals
Payment for services (e.g., consulting fees, honoraria, paid authorship)
Rhythm Pharmaceuticals develops a MC4R antagonist for the treatment of rare genetic disorders of obesity. Dr. Kaplan is the Associate Director of the Nutrition Obesity Research Center at Harvard with responsibility over the administration and management of this grant. The grant supports a large base of investigators throughout the Harvard system who are engaged in research in the fields of nutrition and obesity, including genetic disorders of obesity. In this role, Dr. Kaplan serves as a member of the committee that selects which research projects will be funded under this grant. Because the research conducted under the grant and the company focus on obesity and related disorders, the results of the studies supported by the grant could be of interest to the companies. The Partners Committee on Outside Activities review panel evaluated the financial interests in connection with this grant and determined that, based on the close connection between the companies' interests and the research supported by the grant, the financial interests could directly and significantly affect Dr. Kaplan’s grant administration activities.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.
