Illiac Software, Inc.

Listed Reason

I create content (lessons & assignments) for the music theory software app, Harmonia.

Additional Comments

I work on content related to my own courses during office hours, but all other content for Harmonia is created outside of work time and completed on my personal computer. REC ID: 11 RESEARCH NUMBER: 1448915 TYPE: Grant PROJECT NAME : "STTR Phase I: Automated Music Theory Instruction for Secondary and Post-Secondary Education"
NSF "STTR Phase I: Automated Music Theory Instruction for Secondary and Post-Secondary Education." #1448915 I conduct research in music theory pedagogy and computer-aided instruction. I conduct research in the area of music theory pedagogy and computer-aided instruction. I study the automated algorithmic analysis of tonal music, curriculum development and teaching strategies, learning sequences, as well as automated assessment & evaluation. Thus, creating a computer application that promotes student learning and engagement and pedagogical content for such an app is a vital part of my research. The Harmonia project has been supported by the National Science Foundation and I have presented my research related to this project (first Chorale Composer and then Harmonia) in numerous conferences, workshops, and invited presentations. While my research and work for Illiac Software intersect, Illiac Software is a small startup and has generated no cashflow, so I have received no money for my 5% of shares in the company. The only money I have received has been in the form of travel support to attend conferences or trade shows. The bulk of the work I do for Illiac Software is building pedagogical content for teachers and students that can be used in the Harmonia app. The documents I create generally consist of interactive exercises and lesson pages (interactive in that they may contain editable pitches/analytical fields & video links). Most of this work has been a matter of redesigning my own pre-existing materials to incorporate audio, video, and editable musical examples, which can be rendered interactive in the app. Once I find that my students benefit from the enhanced documents, I then submit them to Illiac Software for submission and additional testing. I do not consider this a conflict of interest with regard to time because the work is already something I would be doing for my students, since updating notes and handouts based on researched best practices is generally something I do every semester. Once the work is completed for my own students, only then do I send it to Illiac Software.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.

Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.

ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
