Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Based on WU’s Research COI Policy and the Procedures for Determining and Managing Research Financial Conflicts of Interests, the Conflicts of Interest Review Committee (CIRC) determined Dr. Hultgren’s personal financial relationship with Fimbrion, related to the above referenced research, creates a financial conflict of interest due to the following reasons:
• The primary focus of Fimbrion Therapeutics, an entity with which he owns equity, is to commercialize the IP being evaluated in the above mentioned research.
• His personal financial relationship is directly related to the study because the study is evaluating a product licensed by Fimbrion.
• His role, as described above, could directly affect all aspects of the study.
While the CIRC determined Dr. Hultgren has a financial conflict of interest, there are mitigating factors that help address the situation:
• Due to the research being basic in nature and in its early stages, the outcomes of the research are unlikely to directly impact the value of the company.
• Dr. Hultgren is uniquely qualified by virtue of his expertise and experience, and the research could not be conducted as effectively without his involvement.
• Further research will be required to develop the IP into a commercialized product.
• Additionally, a plan has been developed to mitigate Dr. Hultgren’s financial conflict of interest.
Delineating the role of inflammation and the microbiota in uropathogenic E. coli intestinal colonization
Relevance Urinary tract infections (UTI) annually affect millions of women and have a high rate of recurrence and significant morbidity. Despite widespread acceptance that the gastrointestinal tract microbiota is the primary reservoir for Uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC), which leads to downstream UTI, surprisingly little is known about UPEC colonization and fitness in the gut niche. This proposed research seeks to characterize and subsequently target, via available pilus inhibitors, the interactions of two pili that I have found to enhance UPEC intestinal colonization
