Labor Day marks many things -- but traditionally for political candidates, it marks the opening of the floodgates of negative advertising by opponents.

This November, we know our airwaves will be inundated with ads funded by shadowy anonymous GOP Super PACs with an allergy to the truth.

Our candidates must be prepared to fight back, get their positive message out and set the record straight. That's where you come in. Today, I am writing about five progressive Democrats who could use our urgent help.

Joe Miklosi is in a tight race in Aurora, Colorado where he is taking on extremist Republican lawmaker Rep. Mike Coffman, a close ally of Paul Ryan and a supporter of his Medicare-ending budget. The latest polls show the race is neck-and-neck and Miklosi is only trailing by a small margin.

Annie Kuster is running in New Hampshire against Congressman Bass, a two-time supporter of the Ryan Budget, voting twice to gut Medicare. Annie is running a remarkable campaign and polls have shown her in the lead, which has made her a top target of GOP Super PACs.

Dan Maffei lost his seat in 2010 by the narrowest of margins and is back running in this Syracuse district. He is running against one of the Tea Party's favorite Republicans, Ann Marie Buerkle. The GOP Super PACs have circled their wagons to try to keep her in power. Dan needs your help.

Manan Trivedi is an Iraq War veteran and a primary care physician running against Republican incumbent Jim Gerlach in Pennsylvania's 6th. Manan has what it takes to beat Congressman Gerlach, but outside groups have circled this one as a must-win.

Raul Ruiz is also a physician and a problem solver running in California's 36th district. The son of farm workers, he takes on Republican Mary Bono Mack this November. This district is more winnable than ever, but that means outside GOP groups know it too.

These progressive candidates need our help today. Please consider giving $X to one or all of these outstanding candidates today.

Onward,

Howard Dean
