Mentioned in a privacy incident report created by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs on February 4, 2015. Also cited in 7 other reports.

Report ID: PSETS0000114857, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

Reported Entity: VBAVACO

Issue:

Veteran called the National Call Center to report that he saw six other Veterans' information on his eBenefits account. The Veteran reports that he does not know who they are. He provided the names of the individuals but did not state what data was visible.

Outcome:

02/17/15: . A contractor created an error which exposed a Veteran's dependents information to another Veteran through eBenefits. It wasn't an eBenefits system error. Vet A logged in to EBN and saw 6 dependents in his account. The dependents belong to Vet B. The contractor listed them in the wrong account. The account has been corrected but still, Vet A saw PII for Vet B's spouse, parent and four children. I do not have access to EBN but those that do told me the PII visible on the dependent's tab includes the name and SSN. I have emailed the PO and informed her that credit monitoring would possibly be granted for the adults and the credit review or whatever it's called may be granted for those under age 18. The Incident Resolution Service Team has determined that the adult dependants will be sent a letter offering credit protection services. The minor dependants will be offored web crawling services.
