Report ID: PSETS0000091495, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

Reported Entity: MUSKOGEE OK - 351

Issue:

On 06/10/13, a School Certifying Official contacted the VA and reported that the school had not received multiple tuition and fee payments for students receiving education benefits. Research shows that on 03/08/13, the VA received a form updating the College's banking information. The form we received contained the banking name, facility code and address of one of the attending students. This resulted in a total of $70,965.20 input into the students account. The bank suspended the students account as a result of the suspicious deposits and contacted the Office Of Inspector General (OIG). The OIG representative advised the VA to proceed with the collection of the funds and to not make contact with the student as the bank had identified attempts to make two large withdrawals on the account.

Outcome:

07/08/13: The OIG stated to the Privacy Officer that they had initiated an investigation into the student's activities and the school conducted an internal review of activities but the PO does not have the results of either yet. 07/19/13: Update: The student did indeed have access to the names and SSN of the students whose transactions were deposited into his account. 72 individuals will receive letters offering credit protection services.
