Issue:
Based on staff interview and record review, the facility failed to maintain the privacy and confidentiality for one patient (Patient A), when an employee inadvertently gave Patient A ' s laboratory information to another patient.Findings:An interview was conducted on 2/10/12 at 11:30 AM, with the facility ' s Health Information Officer (HIO). The HIO stated that on 1/25/12, he was notified that an employee had inadvertently given the wrong laboratory results to another patient (Patient B). The HIO further stated that the facility became aware when Patient B got home and noticed the wrong name on the laboratory work. The HIO stated that Patient B notified the facility of the mistake, and then brought the laboratory sheet back to the facility.A review on 2/10/12 of the laboratory information that was disclosed in error had the following Personal Health Information (PHI) Name Address Birth Diagnosis Lab testAnother interview was conducted on 2/10/12 at 11:30 AM, with the facility ' s HIO who stated that the employee involved was disciplined and educated.
