Our work to #EndGunViolence is far from over. Today, the House will vote on #HR1112, another bipartisan common sense gun violence prevention measure, which will save lives by closing the Charleston Loophole. 1/4 https://t.co/53n9nJlpQC
The Charleston Loophole was exposed in 2015 after the AME Church massacre in Charleston, SC. The shooter – who was prohibited by law from possessing a firearm – was able to acquire his gun before the FBI could complete his background check. This is not an isolated incident. 2/4
The Charleston Loophole has allowed... ⚠ 4,000+ guns to be sold in 2017 alone to people prohibited from owning a firearm ⚠ 35,000+ gun transfers between 2008-2017 to purchasers prohibited from owning a firearm 3/4
#HR1112 will close this loophole by: ✅ Extending the FBI background check review period from 3 business days to 10 business days ✅ Minimizes the risk of “default proceed” gun sales 4/4
