The @business article on generic drug manufacturing and Mylan atorvastatin causes us concern. Their analysis appears to reflect who sent adverse events to FDA in drawing conclusions, not who actually manufactured the drug. We will respond but want to reassure patients in interim.

For these reasons we’ve advised on limitations of drawing the aforementioned conclusions from data that was accessed in this case. FDA drug safety experts are still attempting to unwind the conclusions to evaluate what analysis was done in reaching them. Full statement to follow.

At this time, based on a preliminary effort to back into @business results, we think they may have generated these numbers by mistakenly using the sender organization data available in the public dashboard (rather than product manufacturer which is not available in the dashboard)

This can lead to an erroneous conclusion, as it may have in this case, that certain drugs made by certain firms experience more adverse events; when no such finding exists. We’ll provide a robust analysis of the data but at this time, don’t believe the article finding is correct.

In the meantime, we want to reassure patients taking this generic medicine that we stand behind it’s safety and quality, and we are vigorously evaluating the data reported to us to confirm our preliminary analysis.
