Had the officer instead been a soldier kneeling on a prisoner’s neck this would be a war crime. I call for peace, justice for the victim, acknowledgment that most officers of the law are moral and just servants, and that behavior that isn’t acceptable in war has no place here.

Authoritarianism and fascist regimes were on the rise before the virus hit. As instability spreads and vacuums of power develop, hostile actors and governments that don’t share our values will fill those voids.
