It’s hard to capture the expanse of his legacy, his ability to unite, and the depth of his impact. From Selma to Washington, Congressman Lewis possessed a quiet power that could move mountains, and that’s exactly what he did.

The day I was sworn in, he hugged both of my kids, bringing tears to my eyes. John Lewis was a national treasure — a combination of brilliance and kindness, patriotism and leadership that is far too rare these days.

I’ll never forget when John traveled to Hackensack to help our campaign. I tried to explain to my young daughter just what this meant — one of the icons responsible for advancing civil rights in America joining us in North Jersey.
