On my first week, I told a few (in what I thought was a friendly conversation) that I was worried about the militarization of the police in America. My truck got covered with “Black Lives Matter” fliers to taunt me.

I also had a the friend of a cop I tried to fire—an ICE agent—threaten me in a gas station. I called the agency. Called my lawyer. Nothing camecof it. Even the lawyer was scared.

Even as “Commissioner,” I was told again and again about the “Thin Blue Line” and how so much was none of my business. It was a constant battle because the board would let them do what they want. They didn’t want to be painted as “anti-cop.”

When I left, the guy I left in charge was a good. But I learned, even on that small level, that we need to assert more civilian control—everywhere

I was the “Commisioner” of our small town. Most of the officers were great, loved them. But I had to fight some the the leaders constantly, over the most petty nonsense, like painting the cars partially white—they were all black, tricked out, with black tinted windows.
