#FDA will forcefully address a spike in kids use of e-cigs. All options are on the table. We have major new steps we’ll take in coming weeks. Manufacturers have a closing window to offer steps to resolve this public health crisis, or we’ll act unilaterally https://t.co/LFoQSlVGUR

Vapes, vaporizers, vape pens, hookah pens, e-cigarettes and e-pipes are some of the many terms used to describe electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). These non-combustible tobacco products may look like cigarettes, cigars, pipes, pens or USB flash drives. https://t.co/JwEaRjQAi3

We have new data that shows a disturbingly sharp rise in the number of teens using e-cigs in the last year. None of the other metrics re. kids & tobacco are moving in a favorable direction, incl. # of kids using trad’l cigarettes, cigars or chewing tobacco. There is no good news.

The Family Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009 gave #FDA authority to regulate tobacco products. FDA initially regulated cigarettes, smokeless, and roll-your-own tobacco. In August 2016, FDA finalized a rule to regulate all tobacco products, including ENDS. https://t.co/2DzO5WVixu

Youth use of e-cigs has reached epidemic proportion. If current trends continue, we'll have a generation of kids addicted to nicotine. In today’s #FDA #SUNDAYTWEETORIAL I’m going to talk about steps #FDA is already taking, and those we'll announce, to stem this danger to kids. https://t.co/8D2jJRmD0P

These products use an e-liquid that typically consists of varying levels of nicotine, as well as flavorings and other chemicals. The liquid is heated to create an aerosol that the user inhales. https://t.co/7WO76A3UQi

Over the past several years e-cigarettes were the most commonly used tobacco product by youth. In fact, more than 2 million middle and high school students were current users of e-cigarettes in 2017. https://t.co/HTMu2HuXo5 https://t.co/YR11CCVoK8

Even before this new data e-cig use was on the rise among kids; climbing 1.5% to 11.7% among high school students and 0.6% to 3.3% among middle school students from 2011-2017. New data we’ll release soon shows a shocking acceleration in these trends. Rates of e-cig use has spiked https://t.co/lHaiymfzpS

The Act banned "characterizing" flavors such as strawberry, vanilla and cinnamon from combustible cigarettes to minimize the attractiveness of these products to kids. But other flavored tobacco products, including hookah, smokeless tobacco and e-cigs have remained on the market.

There’s a difference between some low-level, casual use by teens (a low level of use that we’ll never fully eliminate) and widespread abuse, misuse, and addiction, to nicotine by kids. Growth in use of e-cigs has reached a level that’s deeply disturbing. It's widespread, epidemic

More and more I’m hearing from parents of kids who are addicted to nicotine and e-cigs; telling me how easy it is for teens to buy these e-cigs, how the e-cig images are all over social media, how their kids tell them so many of their peer group in high school are using them

Why is this happening? In a 2016 survey, availability of flavors was one of the principal reasons young people said they used e-cigs, cited by 31% of young vapers. Use by friend or family was the other major reason, cited by 39%. https://t.co/lKeQjpYq5I

What we see happening is concerning because teens’ brains are still developing and nicotine use can put teens at risk of mood disorders and permanent lowering of impulse control. It can also rewire their brain to crave more nicotine https://t.co/az3WBMyBqj. https://t.co/fHicDxEFuq
