Another tragic outbreak of Measles puts young children at significant risk. These rising outbreaks, and the growing threat of worsening spread, are a direct consequence of debunked skepticism of MMR vaccine and our negligent accommodation of those theories https://t.co/Th3CV0H55L

The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated. Vaccination has been shown to reduce the risk of flu illnesses, hospitalizations and even the risk of flu-related death in children. https://t.co/1mwWgbyq3a https://t.co/Wwc1a3Zt4R

The bipartisan Substance Use-Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treat for Patients and Communities Act (SUPPORT) was signed into law by Pres. Trump on 10/24. FDA is taking immediate steps to implement our portion of the new law https://t.co/y0dtAJSAiW. https://t.co/h7iSJyysK5

It gives FDA new tools in our efforts to: prevent new opioid addiction; advance innovation in less risky non-opioid pain drugs; support development of better treatments for opioid-use disorder; & increase enforcement/interdiction against illegal drugs https://t.co/ERHirvaSV5.

Last week saw concrete action to combat the devastating crisis of opioid addiction plaguing our nation. In today’s #FDA #MONDAYTWEETORIAL I’m going to talk about a new law that grants FDA meaningful new authorities to more forcefully address this crisis. https://t.co/ygAmqbxKJz

Consider interdiction/enforcement. Potentially dangerous drugs enter the U.S. through our 9 int’l mail facilities (IMFs). Packages arrive from more than 180 countries, which often lack advanced electronic info about their contents that would help in targeting shipments. https://t.co/QUJWIaZQtV

FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations https://t.co/HkxeJSM0hf helps to combat the problem. They work with Customs & Border Protection & FDA regulatory staff, which IDs and refers suspect shipments, as well as the Justice Dept., which prosecutes criminal cases. https://t.co/IcsQhjDfFy

OCI opened 339 port of entry investigations on illicit packages in FY 2017 and 220 in FY 2018. These investigations have been successful in holding criminals accountable w/ 120 arrests or prosecutions, more than 80 guilty pleas, and 90 convictions in FY 2018 alone. https://t.co/btxvtDDfxJ

10s of millions of FDA-regulated products pass through these IMFs. In FY 2017, 86% of packages reviewed by FDA contained drugs, including illegal tramadol, codeine & morphine. Illegal versions of the highly-potent opioid fentanyl are a growing concern. https://t.co/f9Nn4VKeBn

Under the new law, FDA will also be able to bring actions to debar those who have been convicted of a felony involving illegal importation of drugs or who have engaged in a pattern of importing adulterated or misbranded drugs.
SteveFDA (R-D.C.)
@SGottliebFDA
Once debarred, FDA can forbid their future drug importation so that bad actors can’t simply re-open their business under a different name & continue illegal practices. Also, law enforcement will be able to take action against the debarred entities who try to import drugs. https://t.co/rR7dGn6HPA

Given the volume of mail & the time it takes to inspect packages that come in all shapes & forms, even nondescript plastic bags, FDA can only inspect a small % of packages containing drugs. Some are unlabeled, undeclared or drugs that are masquerading as other products. https://t.co/wYAmsEnMcB

Another important new tool provided by SUPPORT: mandatory recall of a controlled substance if there is a reasonable probability that the substance would cause a serious adverse health consequence or death.
