4/ I personally think 1.3 million people dead to achieve herd immunity is not only acceptable but unnecessary. We can lower disease transmission significantly (NY has a positivity rate less than 1%) AND still reopen if we do three things: Wear masks Wash hands Watch distance

5/ How long must we put up with the inconvenience of washing our hands, wearing face masks, and avoiding crowds/keeping 6 ft between us and others? Likely only until the beginning of 2021 when we have a safe and effective vaccine- That’s a way to safely achieve heard immunity.

6/6 So asking about herd immunity is a fair question, but pursuing it it’s not a fair option to the over 1 million additional people who would give up their lives to make this a possibility. We can safely reopen and stop the disease and it tracks without such loss of life.

@VincentRK Hard to get people to sacrifice for a thread they don’t directly see. That’s why we have to help people understand that it’s not public health vs reopening or freedom, but rather that by following public health measures, we more quickly get to reopening and more freedom.

4/ In the case of this new virus that causes #COVID19, around half of the people who have it actually feel and look fine. They have NO symptoms or are “asymptomatic.” You won’t know that you or someone standing next to you has the virus, and is capable of spreading it.

5/ Once scientists realized this new #coronavirus behaved differently than anything we'd seen before, recommendations on masks changed. ‍ Current research/ data now tells us 1️⃣of the most effective ways to prevent #COVID19 spread is for as many people as possible to wear masks!

6/6 Scientists and health officials give the best advice they can based on available info- but when the data changes, so too must the advice. The high degree of asymptomatic spread of #COVID19 is why we all should embrace wearing as part of a safe & sustained reopening.

An important caveat- in some studies / data, some who were called “asymptomatic” (no symptoms), were later discovered to be either presymptomatic (developed symptoms days later) or mildly symptomatic. But the practical point is they still were out and infectious. Hence a
