Those of us who’ve suffered a direct loss know there’s no easy answer for the grief. Sometimes that grief can become personally destructive, and I’m blessed that with a loving family and the obligation to make a better world for my sons that I’ve been saved from that.

So I’ve channeled my grief into something positive and productive: running for Congress to oppose these foreign adventures that have made Memorial Day a personal day of mourning for so many.

For me, that person was my wife (and also my best friend). Today I’m honoring Shannon Kent, who died fighting ISIS in Syria. Because I’m in DC for the campaign, I have the opportunity to visit her grave at Arlington National Cemetery.

It has a special meaning to me, a meaning that is shared by too many other Americans today who’ve lost someone close to them. For some it’s a father, a mother, a brother or sister, or perhaps someone they were not related to by blood but by life, a best friend.

Shannon was killed a month after President Trump ordered the withdrawal of our troops from Syria— a move that was later blocked by the Washington Establishment. And among those voting to block the withdrawal was Congresswoman Jamie Herrera-Beutler

Fellow Patriot, Today is Memorial Day, the day our nation sets aside to honor those who’ve fallen while serving our nation in battle.
