ProPublica analyzed federal education data from the 2009-2010 school year to examine whether states provide high-poverty schools equal access to advanced courses and special programs that researchers say will help them later in life. This is the first nationwide picture of exactly which courses are being taken at which schools and districts across the country. Key Findings
Advanced Placement courses – which experts link to academic success – are widely available in Colorado, but enrollment in AP courses is lower in poorer schools The lack of access to such classes at poorer schools is greater in Colorado than in many other states.
While there is no specific state funding to help low-income schools enroll more students in AP courses, the official said the number of students in AP or taking community college courses will be increasingly important in how the state assesses school and district performance.
