GMAC's first aid came in mid-December of 2008, when Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson stepped in to rescue GM and Chrysler. You can see the full tally of the auto industry bailout here. It received further aid in 2009. The company was renamed Ally Financial in 2010.
Treasury began the process of extricating itself from the investment in December of 2010, when it converted $5.5 billion of its preferred stock into common stock, leaving it with a common equity stake of 74 percent in Ally.
