Conflict of Interest

Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Disclosed Conflict of Interest with

Tree of Life Thai Chi Center

Disclosed Value
Listed Reason
Equity Interest - Non-publicly traded entity ( e.g., stock, stock option, or other ownership interest)

The Co-Chairs of the Partners HealthCare Committee on Conflict of Interest (CCOI), by delegation, evaluated Dr. Wayne’s financial interest in the Tree of Life Tai Chi Center, a Tai Chi center/school offering tai chi classes and instruction. The research under this R01 grant is evaluating the effects of Tai Chi, as an intervention, on quality of life and exercise capacity of patients with COPD. Upon review, the Co-Chairs determined that the Tree of Life Tai Chi Center could be affected by the research in that a positive outcome could potentially increase the demand for Tai Chi at the center. That is, this SFI was determined to be a related SFI. The Co-Chairs further determined that, given the magnitude and nature of the SFI and Dr. Wayne’s role on the grant, the interest creates an FCOI with this R01 grant; that is, the interest could directly and significantly affect the design, conduct, or reporting of the research.

Listed Research Project
Tai Chi after Pulmonary Rehabilitation in Patients with COPD: A Randomized Trial

Although pulmonary rehabilitation is beneficial for persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), there is currently no program that facilitates continued self-exercise after formal rehabilitation has ended. Studies have shown that continued activity is essential in keeping exercise benefits long-term. This study examines tai chi, a low-moderate intensity mind-body exercise that may be helpful in maintaining the benefits of exercise after pulmonary rehabilitation in persons with COPD.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.

Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.

ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
