Development of a Tai Chi Program to Overcome Barriers to Cardiac Rehabilitation
Traditional exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation programs (CRPs) are highly beneficial for patients recovering from a heart attack or from a cardiac operation, but unfortunately only less than one third of eligible candidates join this type of programs. This study will develop and pilot-test the feasibility and acceptability of a new Tai Chi based intervention designed to promote physical activity in patients who are unable or unwilling to attend traditional rehabilitation. If proven to be safe and effective, Tai Chi training could be offered as an alternative to traditional CRPs to target an important component of the secondary prevention of coronary heart disease - physical inactivity - in this high risk population.
