Conflict of Interest
Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Dr. White has a financial interest in Apnimed, Inc., a clinical-stage company dedicated to the discovery of novel pharmacologic therapies for sleep apnea and related disorders. Dr. White is the Chair of the company’s Advisory Board and receives compensation for serving in this role. The research project focuses on identifying the specific anatomic locations involved with obstructive sleep apnea in individual patients; if successful, the methodology developed could be extended to other non-PAP treatments, such as drug therapy to activate pharyngeal muscles, which could increase demand for drug treatments such as those being developed by Apnimed. The Partners Committee on Outside Activities reviewed the financial interest in connection with the research and determined that the financial interest could directly and significantly affect the design, conduct, or reporting of the research. The committee further determined that the conflict could be managed with the implementation of an FCOI management plan.
Clinical Methods for Determining the Site and Severity of Pharyngeal Collapse
PROJECT NARRATIVE The proposed research is relevant to public health because OSA is a major health concern that is inadequately treated with existing therapies. The NHLBI 2011 Sleep Disorders Research Plan states that ?studies are need- ed to identify clinically meaningful subtypes [of OSA], and algorithms informing the selection of optimal thera- peutic strategies.? Therefore, the search for patient selection criteria using reliable prediction methods is a high research priority. The proposed research directly addresses this important component of the NIH's mis- sion.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.
Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.
ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
