Foresite is a privately held startup company that has licensed eldercare sensor technologies from the University of Missouri and is focused on commercialization of the technologies. The technologies include an in-home health monitoring system and electronic health record to support aging in place. These technologies were developed through research by the College of Engineering and School of Nursing at the University of Missouri under the direction of Dr. Marilyn Rantz and Dr. Marjorie
Skubic. Therefore, the intellectual property licensed and commercialized by Foresite is related to Dr.
Skubic’s current institutional responsibilities.
The purpose of the proposed work is to refine a health alert system by developing new algorithms using data from sensors and an electronic health record (EHR) that provide alerts of very early changes in health status that are customized to the individual consumer. A consumer-appropriate interface will also be developed to help consumers better manage their own health, and the project will explore consumer opinions on how the system could be used.
It is the determination of the University of Missouri’s Conflict of Interest Committee that Dr. Rantz’ and Dr. Skubic’s equity interest in Foresite Healthcare could directly affect the design, conduct and reporting of the research.
Customized Health Alerts and Consumer-Centered Interfaces Using In-Home and Wearable Sensors
PROJECT NARRATIVE We will build on our current work using intelligent, in-home sensor systems with automated health alerts to investigate new health alert algorithms that are more sensitive and more customized to the individual. These will be tested with data from 13 senior housing sites in Missouri using clinician feedback and actual health trajectories for evaluation. We will also recruit subjects in independent living housing to solicit the views of consumers on wearable sensors, health alerts, and user interfaces that allow seniors and their family members to view the health alert information in a way that empowers them to better self-manage their own health.
