Conflict of Interest

Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Listed Research Project
Self-management via Health Kiosk by Community-residing Older Adults

Many potentially effective e-health technologies fail to enjoy widespread adoption by older adults due to lack of accessible, user-friendly, delivery platforms. This project will study older adults' views, motivations, and patterns of use of an adaptive, community-based, multi-user health kiosk over 18 months of study participation. The goal is to understand how and why older adults use a health kiosk to live a healthier lifestyle and monitor and manage their chronic conditions. Kiosks capable of adapting to their users will be situated in 9 congregate sites including senior centers, senior housing, and continuing care retirement communities in southwestern Pennsylvania. At the kiosks, older adults will be able to check and track their weight, blood pressure, oxygen saturation level, grip strength, and mobility. They will respond to health-related surveys and exchange messages with the Project Coordinator. Further, they will engage with e-health interventions designed to improve self-management, patient-provider communication, sleep, mobility and balance, physical activity and nutrition, bladder health, and mood. Periodically, summary reports of data gathered at the health kiosk will be provided to each study participant's primary care provider, to serve as a springboard for communication between patient and provider. In addition to tracking older adults' interactions with the kiosk over 18 months of study participation, we will interview 90 older adults about their use of the kiosk relative to selected health needs.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.

Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.

ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
