But at a time when so many people in our own country insist on tearing down America, our people, our history, and our principles, it is critically important this year that we remember to celebrate the best of America. 9/11

And I remember the loss we later felt when we learned that many of those same courageous young men and women would not be coming home. There are many hard lessons to be learned from what happened on 9/11, the 20 years of war that followed, and the recent withdrawal. 8/11

I remember the pride I felt in my country and the unity we all displayed with American flags hanging outside every door. I remember the courage displayed as thousands of our young men and women enlisted in the military to fight back. 7/11

For them, that's when the nightmare started. 9/11 impacted us all, and it fundamentally changed this country in ways both good & bad. I remember the tears and the shock on my friends' and family's faces as we stayed glued to our TVs and absorbed all that had happened. 6/11

For me, thank God, that's where the nightmare ended. But every year on this day, I think about the thousands of kids who, like me, were also watching on TVs in their classrooms but who got a very different message delivered. "Your mom is missing." "Dad is gone." 5/11

I remember exactly where I was sitting in my Social Studies class when someone came in and whispered something in my teacher's ear. My teacher rushed over to the TV and turned it on, without even so much as explaining to us what was going on. 2/11

I watched in horror until about an hour later when someone came to my classroom looking for me. I panicked. "It's ok, Patrick," she said. "Your parents are safe." My dad had managed to contact the school to pass along the message. 4/11

On came the TV, and there was the first tower billowing smoke. We knew something was wrong, but we had no idea what had caused the fire. Seconds later, Flight 175 flew into the second tower. My mind immediately ran to my parents. They were flying that day. 3/11
