How to read these graphs:

The graphs on the left show the rate of growth compared to the earliest year for which we have data -- in most cases 2003. The gray lines represent a theoretical constant annual rate of change.

The bar charts on the right show the actual values for each year we have data. For example, in 2008, Colorado had 3,442 new wells drilled.

State Data

New wells drilled are based on a calendar year, and 2009 numbers are not complete. Enforcement staff numbers from '03 to '06 were not made available because Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission staff said that due to a reorganization within the COGCC, staff is tracked differently and it would not be accurate to compare current numbers with past numbers.

BLM Data

In Colorado, much of the oil and gas drilling takes place on land that is federally regulated, which can include national parks or Native American reservations. Data provided by the Bureau of Land Management represents wells drilled on that land.
