Gas Drilling's Environmental Impact

Illinois

How to read these graphs:

The graphs on the left show the rate of growth compared to the earliest year for which we have data -- in most cases 2003. The gray lines represent a theoretical constant annual rate of change.

The bar charts on the right show the actual values for each year we have data. For example, in 2008, Illinois had 580 new wells drilled.

State Data

Illinois’ enforcement staff numbers declined in 2005 due to layoffs. All numbers are based on a fiscal year. Enforcement actions reflect notices of violation and director’s decisions. Illinois’ total wells come from World Oil’s annual count of total oil and gas producing wells.

12 enforcement staff for 15,937 wells in 2008
