How to read these graphs:

The graphs on the left show the rate of growth compared to the earliest year for which we have data -- in most cases 2003. The gray lines represent a theoretical constant annual rate of change.

The bar charts on the right show the actual values for each year we have data. For example, in 2008, New Mexico had 1,557 new wells drilled.

State Data

New Mexico’s Oil Conservation Division declined to provide data on its enforcement staff numbers, and said it does not track historical enforcement actions in a consistent manner, and would not release any of that information. The OCD also did not make total wells information available. Information listed here is from World Oil’s annual count of oil and gas producing wells. The information listed from the BLM was provided by the regional bureau.

BLM Data

In New Mexico, much of the oil and gas drilling takes place on land that is federally regulated, which can include national parks or Native American reservations. Data provided by the Bureau of Land Management represents wells drilled on that land.
