My father's functioning military unit was a detachment, typically 9 people. When the 7th Army came up from southern France, the detachment left 3rd Army to accompany the 44th Infantry Division. My father kept a souvenir of a small map he drew of part of Paris. This figures to get him from the river to a boarding house. I've got a hypothetical (60%?) role of his helping set up a specific civilian company to repair military radios. He apparently was in Paris for a while.
