Project Description

Antivenom medication for Khost Hospital

Project Goals

A medical project nomination is made for the purchase of polyvalent snake antivenom. Snake bite is a major but neglected public health problem throughout Southwest Asia, including Afghanistan. In the summer months snakes enter homes to seek shelter from the sun; others enter dwellings in search of rodents. Many of the snakes are venomous and aggressive an untreated bite can prove fatal, especially for a child. Fatal outcomes are also associated with a delay in treatment. For this reason a large supply is requested, so that treatment can be immediately instituted in the case of invenomation. The amount of antivenom administered to each patient can vary according to the clinical response to the initial dose and ongoing assessment of the severity of poisoning. The cost per vial of polyvalent antivenom is 44 USD. Two hundred vials are requested, for a total project cost of 8,800 USD.
