Project Description
Provide literacy classes for up to 150 women over a 12 month period.
Project Goals
This project will reach approximately 120-150 women in the city of Ghazni. Two particular villages are targets of this program; Haidar Abad Village, and Qalai Amir Mohammad Khan village. Individual home owners will make their homes available for the 2 hours a day that the program will run. In the first village there will be two different classes taught. And in the latter there will be 3 classes. The classes will be taught by five teachers at five different locations to enable the participants ease of access. The classes will consist of 20-30 students each. Each class will run for 2 hours daily except Friday for 12 months. There will be, in addition to the 5 literacy teachers, a supervisor and a program director. The supervisor will make daily visits to each class and review lessons given as well as lessons planned for the next day. He will report to the program director. The program director will oversee the course and provide weekly and monthly progress reports to the PRT. This program will be managed by the HADAF NGO, registered with the ministry of commerce and will be monitored as well by the Womens Department. In addition literacy, participants will also learn basic numeracy. This program will provide participants with the basic ability to read and write. It is noteworthy that in Ghazni District only 21% o schools are Girl-Friendly. This is determined by whether a school is all girls or a mixed school. Women, therefore, in some instances are still not afforded the opportunity to gain the skills that this program will provide. This ability will provide these women greater opportunities for employment. It will also help them to better understand their society through an understanding of signage and written materials available to citizens. It will allow them freedom of access to services available from different government agencies. In addition, they will be able to assist their children with their educational needs in the early years and thus help prepare them for a better future. Lastly, this program will provide these women with the self confidence that being able to read instills.
