Project Goals

There is an immediate humanitarian need to establish a safer crossing point that can sustain mobility through all seasons. The current bridge was reconnoitered on 21 May 2011 and was observed to be in a poor state of repair. A number of local nationals are reported to have drowned as a result of falling into the river during heavy flow periods during the snow melt. The population of Nili has established a solid education system which is supported through an overwhelming attendance of children in local schools. A number of these children travel across this bridge daily on foot as a part of the four hour journey to attend classes. The bridge would not only increase the safety of the children when crossing but would also enhance access of outlying villages to trade at the Nili Bazaar. The bridge will enhance the connection of up to 35 villages from the Shahristan District to Nili DC.

A complete rebuild of the Nili footbridge over a period of 6 weeks will ensure that this key transport route can be maintained during the construction process. This project will prove to be the first ISAF CERP project delivered in the Dai Kundi province who are very receptive to working with the local government, coalition forces and ANP. The funding from the bridge will engage a local engineer who will employ local builders on site. The Governor of Dai Kundi is supportive of this potential project as highlighted during a shura with COMD CTU on 07 Jun 2011.
