Project Goals

The government of Afghanistan sponsors the Farah Labor Union with the intent of protecting workers from employer abuse and ensuring they are paid living wages. It is not unheard of in Afghanistan for employers to refuse to pay their employees after work is completed or to pay them less than the amount promised upon hiring. Disgruntled workers in an area increase its instability. Since the Labor Union exists in part to help protect Afghan workers from employer abuse, including potential abuse from contractors hired by the PRT, Provincial Reconstruction Team Farah has met regularly with the Farah Labor Union leadership and is interested in its success.

The PRT suggested to the Labor Union director that he could organize union membership via a registration form. The Labor Union director liked the idea and saw many benefits to having such a form. However, because the idea was propsed outside of the fiscal budget cycle of the government of Afghanistan, the Labor Union does not have sufficient funding in order to produce the copies. The Labor Union plans to include this operating expense in its next year's GIRoA-sponsored budget. In the meantime, the Labor Union is requesting the PRT's assistance in paying for the forms to be copied locally.
