Project Goals
The Eastern Paktika DAT is attempting to provide a micro grant to a local farmer named Mohammad Zahir so that he can grow his apple growing production. He is a member of the newly created Eastern Paktika Apple Growers Association (EPAGA). Instability and poor security across the region has limited Mohammad Zahir's ability to increase his operations and expand distribution outside of the local markets. Mohammad Zahir is a disadvantaged entrepreneur lacking independent wealth and unable to access sufficient business credit with a primary focus on supporting humanitarian relief. Recent gains achieved by ALP-generated white space across the key economic lines of communication are starting to open trade routes to neighboring Provinces and large industrial centers in Kabul, via access to Highway 1, and Pakistan. The proposed grant would be utilized for the installation of a sustainable cool storage unit to prolong harvest-to-market timelines and to purchase crates for crop handling and storage. Mohammad Zahir has also shown interest and received training in value-adding processing methods to expand marketable goods productions for products such as jam/jelly, apple sauce and dehydrated apples. The added income potential generated from the micro-grant proposal will facilitate the future expansion into marketable processed goods.
