Project Goals
The left canal supplies water to approximately one-third of the arable land within the Andar Irrigation System, and is an integral part of the restoration of the entire system. Repair and improvement of the Left canal, from a point in the vicinity of the village of Ne'Matay to the civinity of Banahal in Giro District will have significant economic impact, increasing the land under cultivation, increasing employment and detracting from the insurgency. This project will repair damage caused by war and lack of consistent canal and infrastructure maintenance over the past 40 years. In conjunction with projects currently being executed and proposed for the Right canal and the dam it self, the projects will impact approximately 18,000 Hectares of land. This project was first proposed as part of an Afghan RAMP assessment in 2003. The project was proposed and studied by the U.S. Government in 2003 and again in 2012. Significant interest has been demonstrated from GIROA officials, including the Director of Water Management for Ghazni Irrigation District, the Director of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock as well as the Andar District Governor. In addition to direct benefits to agriculture and the economy, secondary and tertiary benefits of increased coordination between GIROA and ANSF will enable GIROA led GOV/DEV driven security operations.
