Project Description

SEED AND SAPLING DISTRIBUTION TO FARMERS

Project Goals

It is widely know that recent events have had a detrimental effect on agriculture throughout the Herat Province. A continuing drought coupled with a lack of certified wheat seed and the continuing hostilities have taken it's toll on local farmers. Due to the above mentioned negatives, the cost for seeds and saplings has risen to levels above the means of the average farmer. At this time, the Ministry of Agriculture has determined that wheat is selling at market at a higher price than poppy. Within the 15 districts that make up the Herat Province, it is estimated that 85% of the population utilizes agriculture and livestock as their sole source of income. The Ministry of Agriculture, with the support of the US State Department, has requested assistance for the most at risk farmers in the Province. Now is the time for assistance to have its greatest effect. This distribution, if executed in a timely manner, will allow farmers to sow for the mid-winter planting season. By springtime, we expect to have measurable results throughout the Herat Province. Comments: SEE PROJECT GOALS
