Health

Federal health inspectors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention inspect cruise ships twice a year, checking everything from kitchen equipment to dishwasher temperatures, and grade ships based on what they find. A score below 86 is considered failing. Cruise ships are also required to report all illness outbreaks affecting more than 3% of passengers or crew to the CDC. Inspections and outbreaks from 2010 to the present are shown below.

Food Service General-Galleys

There were open seams around the grooved and flat grill grease drain in the grease chute. Some of these areas were soiled. This was true for all grills of all galleys.

There was a 4-inch gap where the pipes from refrigeration unit #4 penetrated the bulkhead.

Pantry-Dispense Bar / Deck 15

There was a gap where the pipe penetrated the deckhead in front of the carbonator compartment. The collar for the pipe had fallen loose.

Galley-East Galley / Cold Section

The deck was soiled under refrigeration units EF1 and EF2. This area was previously cleaned.

Galley-Play House Dishwash

During active use of the flight-type conveyor dishwashing machine, the far left nozzle of the wash spray arm had an ineffective spray pattern.

Galley-Hot Plate Counters / Deck 5

There were 16 sealed dial thermometers at these undercounter hot plate storage compartments; 15 out of the 16 had moisture and pooled water inside; 4 of these had also a heavy acumulation of mold inside.

The deck below the dishwash machine was heavily soiled.

Provisions-Freezer Units

There were many instances where boxes containing food items were covered with ice, suggesting dripping from condensate.

Provisions-Vegetable Preparation Room

The inside of the 3 potato peelers contained slotted metal fasteners. One of these potato peelers was in use at the time of the inspection.

Provisions-Fruit and Vegetable Cooler

A mesh bag of red radishes was stored directly on the deck.

Bar-Breakers Bar

The screw openings at the base of the beer dispenser were soiled. This bar was open at the moment of inspection.

Bar-Exchange Bar

The inside of the technical compartments at the starboard and port sides were heavily soiled in many areas. In addition, the refrigeration unit pipes at the starboard side were covered with mold. This bar was not open at the moment of inspection.

Medical-Crew Gastrointestinal Illness Reporting

A food and beverage assistant (FBAS) experienced gastrointestinal illness (GI) symptoms at 18:20 on 22 December 2010, but did not report the symptoms to the medical center until 1820 on 23 December. Additionally, only 1 of the remaining 3 cabin mates was contacted by medical for the required verbal interview to both confirm their condition and advise them on handwashing/hygiene and to report if they became ill. An officer had GI symptoms at 11:00 on 28 December and did not report to the medical center until 1700 on 29 December.

Medical-Clinical Specimen Collection

The supply of sterile tubes for specimen collection and analysis for bacterial agents expired on 20 November 2010. Staff stated that the new order was due to arrive on 14 January 2011.

Potable Water-Medical Center - Ward #1

There was no backflow prevention device installed on the flexible shower hose in the ward room #1 toilet room. The hose was long enough to reach the deck.

Integrated Pest Management-Training

The IPM Foundation Training from April 2010 included modules 1-6, but the staff involved with inspecting the provision stores for pests did not train on module 8, which is for provisions inspections.

The delivery inspection log form only included food and hotel supplies delivered to the ship. There was no record of an inspection for pests on other incoming items delivered to the ship, including floral items and packaged equipment or supplies.

The integrated pest management plan was last evaluated for effectiveness in December 2008.

Potable Water-Cabins

There was no backflow prevention device installed on the flexible spray hose connection for the showers in the cabins for disabled persons. The hose was long enough to reach the deck.

Children Area-Toy Box Child Toilet Room

There was no sign posted in this toilet room advising the providers to wash their hands and the children's hands after assisting children using the toilet.

Children Area-Tumblers Room

The night nursery linens were laundered every four days according to staff. Children are assigned the same cot or bed for the entire cruise.

Potable Water-Tank Records

On 16 March, 2010 the interior of the potable water tank 11 was spot painted with a Sigma Phenguard 940 paint product. The records indicate some of the details of the procedure and coating, but not all those details or the details of the drying. Additionally, no information could be found to verify that this coating is approved for potable water tank coating according to ANSI/NSF Standard 61 or an equivalent health standard for potable water tanks.

Room Service-Suction Fittings

The suction covers on the side walls of all four swimming pools did not appear to be a type which meets anti-entrapment or anti-entanglement requirements under ASME/ANSI A112.19.87M or its equivalent. There was no written documentation for these drain covers regarding anti-entrapment approval.

Serious crimes and injuries on cruise ships that make port in the U.S. are required to be reported to the Coast Guard. Smaller-scale crimes and thefts are reported to local police authorities (if reported at all). Incidents and inspections from 2010 to the present are shown below.
