@HankGreelyLSJU One public health issue is whether consumers impute certain assumptions about nutritional value when they see the term “milk,” and whether juices using the term “milk” are failing to deliver those important nutritional components. There’s an existing standard of identity for milk

@HankGreelyLSJU One reasonable public health question is whether - for example - products using the term “milk” should meet certain nutritional measures under that standard of identity - perhaps through some fortification if necessary.

Total Generic Manufacturing Inspections increased meaningfully in 2017 and again in 2018. The scope and strength of our overall oversight footprint grew substantially; evidenced by a sharp rise in enforcement actions in 2017-18 that we’ll publish details on in the next two weeks. https://t.co/kSK37Guena

The @business article on generic drug manufacturing and Mylan atorvastatin causes us concern. Their analysis appears to reflect who sent adverse events to FDA in drawing conclusions, not who actually manufactured the drug. We will respond but want to reassure patients in interim.
SteveFDA (R-D.C.)
@SGottliebFDA
For these reasons we’ve advised on limitations of drawing the aforementioned conclusions from data that was accessed in this case. FDA drug safety experts are still attempting to unwind the conclusions to evaluate what analysis was done in reaching them. Full statement to follow.
SteveFDA (R-D.C.)
@SGottliebFDA
In the meantime, we want to reassure patients taking this generic medicine that we stand behind it’s safety and quality, and we are vigorously evaluating the data reported to us to confirm our preliminary analysis.

Generic drugs provide tremendous public health benefit by promoting access and affordability. They’re subject to rigorous standards and are just as safe and effective as brand counterparts. Our oversight of generic manufacturing has been strengthened substantially under GDUFA.
SteveFDA (R-D.C.)
@SGottliebFDA
This can lead to an erroneous conclusion, as it may have in this case, that certain drugs made by certain firms experience more adverse events; when no such finding exists. We’ll provide a robust analysis of the data but at this time, don’t believe the article finding is correct.

We know that three common foodborne bacteria like to crash parties. They are Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium perfringens and Listeria monocytogenes. And unlike microbes that cause food to spoil, you can’t detect these bacteria by smelling or tasting them. https://t.co/4qxRoAu9DG

Cleanliness is the first rule of safe food preparation. That means washing your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds both before and after handling food and after using the bathroom, changing diapers or handling pets. https://t.co/nceqNQs2xC
