Project Description
Five middle schools in Five districts.Schools serve 200-750 students each, are an approved design with desks, chairs, blackboards & other furniture, a well and protective wall. Each school will have 16 classrooms.
Project Goals
Reason for Project: There are 50-60 schools in th eprovince with no buildings. Classes are held in private residences, tents, or out in the open with students and teachers exposed to the weather. This project will provide a much needed educational infrastructure as well as increase literacy rate, bring teenage males into the education system and away from ACM influence, and strive to acheive goals and objectives established by the ANDS. Schools will be in Matun, Mando Zayi, Nadir Shah Kot, Tani and Gurbuz Districts. Desired Project Effects: Increase school attendance among young, teenage males, removing them from ACM influence. Provide a safe and secure learning environment. Measurable Effects: Increase in literacy rate, increased attendance in schools. Increased support for education system and directorate, district and provincial governments. Comments: Project completed. Pending receiving of SF-1034 for close-out.
Results
Provided a functional school for additional educational opportunities for the youth of Jaji Maidan.
Updates
Dec 22 2009 The Ezhdan, Sati Wan, and Khil Koat schools are all complete. The contracts for Ghazi Abad and Chinar Sangar were both terminated due to poor work. The Hyder Khel school repair is complete. The construction of the Akakhole school in Jaji Maidan is ongoing. The work has been poor thus far. The contractor has been instructed to re-do much of the work. The PRT is currently awaiting a report from the Afghan monitoring and evaluation team to determine the future of the construction. Work on this school is approximately 60% complete. Feb 21 2010 The Ezhdan, Sati Wan, and Khil Koat schools are all complete. The contracts for Ghazi Abad and Chinar Sangar were both terminated due to poor work. The Hyder Khel school repair is complete. The construction of the Akakhole school in Jaji Maidan is ongoing. After a meeting with the Director of Education, he and other provincial leaders discussed the poor work with the contractor (Makaiel Construction Company) and they all signed a promisary note to continue the work and correct any deficiencies. The work still stands at approximately 60% complete and some of this work will still need to be torn down and re-done correctly. Currently working to schedule a meeting with this contractor to explain the requirements to continue. Jun 16 2010 Akakahole School is at approx. 80% done. 75% payment processed. PRT has not been able to accomplish QA/QC mission due to air missions being cancelled. PRT continuing to attempt QA mission. Aug 29 2010 Akakahole School nearly complete. Awaiting acceptance from the Director of Education of the school. Contractor claims that school is complete, but PRT has been unable to complete QA/QC due to air assets being unavaiable. Sep 24 2010 Akakahole School: Turnover documents sent to contractor for acceptance by local department of education. Still unable to visit site due to lack of Air support. Director of Education engineers are equally unable to visit site due to security through ground travel. Dec 6 2010 Project completed and final payment processed. Waiting for SF-1034 to close out the project.
