Project Description

Construct 12 diversion dams for irrigation in 6 districts; Jaji Maidan, Matun, Tani, Tera Zayi, Mando Zayi, and Gubuz. The project will consist of stone masonry dams and retaining walls, canals, spillways and holding pools.

Project Goals

Reason for Project: Agriculture and subsistence farming is 80% of the provincial economy and livelihood. Because of low rainfall, and long, hot and dry growing seasons, farmers rely on manmade irrigation systems to irrigate crops and farmlands. These diversion dams will irrigate thousands of hectares of farmland in the 6 districts providing a source of income and subsistence for at least 600 Afghan families.

Desired Project Effects: Increased agricultural production throughout the province and increased trade and demand for produce in Khost and Pakistan. The dams will protect farmland, residential areas and vital infrastructure from heavy flashflooding. They will demonstrate IRoA ability to meet local populace needs and requirements. This project has been coordinated and approved through the governor and the directors of irrigation and agriculture. It is not on the PDP but supports tenets of the ANDS.

Measurable Effects: Increased agricultural production in the 6 districts, increased income, lower rates of disease and starvation. Increase in goods and produce at markets and exported to Pakistan. More reliance and dependence on provincial and district governments to provide basic needs and services to the populace.
