Project Description

Comprehensive surface and ground water study covering five (5) provinces in southeast Afghanistan (Wardak, Ghazni, Paktya, Logar, and Khost) which will result in identifying potential water resource projects and improve utilization of existing resources which will benefit the people of the region.

Project Goals

o The objective of this study is to evaluate potential water resource projects in the Southeast Afghanistan Provinces of Khost, Paktya, Logar, Wardak and Ghazni that will benefit the people of that region. 

o The final report will assist GIRoA in identifying potential water resource projects and improve utilization of existing resources which will benefit the people of this region. 

o Projects may include: watershed restoration, hydropower, flood control, erosion control, groundwater resources, irrigation dams, canals and drains. 

o The report will provide guidance on how to assess, address and implement water resource projects in a responsible and sustainable manner involving Afghan participation, improve utilization of water resources and prioritizing potential projects to maximize return on investment.

o Project will hire LN consultant (hydro specialist) who will use personal expertise and knowledge of the area - in coordination with various GIRoA ministries and local partners (village elders, etc.) - to build the capacity of knowledge, understanding, and capabilities of GIRoA and its constituents. Comments: CTF Currahee USACE-AED representatives (Lief Christenson and Carlos Brannon) will be the principal project managers; PRT Gardez will have administrative responsiblities/oversight (contractor payments, etc.).
