Project Goals

In order to lay ground work for lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan, the Herat Teacher Training Institute (HTTI) Expansion Project needs to be completed for the greater present day and future well-being of Herat Province.

At present HTTI is operating in three different locations to include the HTTI facility, a local girl's school, and a local high school. The HTTI Expansion project directly responds to the lack of qualified teachers by providing an upper level education opportunity allowing for non-qualified teachers to become qualified (in-service training). At the same time the institute will provide two years specialized education for graduates of grade 12 also allowing for these students to become qualified (pre-service training). In support of both in-service and pre-service training, this project proposes two 20-classroom buildings to conduct teacher training as well as a separate latrine building that will contain separate male and female facilities.

The HTTI Expansion project directly responds to the provision of quality education and opportunity for gender equity for Afghan females. Accepting that the dismally low number of qualified female teachers in Afghanistan directly correlates with families disallowing their daughters, especially older daughters, to attend school, it stands to reason that increasing the number of qualified female teachers in Afghanistan would likewise have a similarly positive impact and increase on the number of female students allowed to study.
