Project Description

Design and construction of a 22km gravel road

Project Goals

Reason for Project: The construction of a 22km road from Gondalabuk to Doab will open up trade, education, and future reconstruction opportunities for residents in and around the area. It will allow access to several valleys that were not able to be accessed before. Nurgram and Doab districts medical facilities and commerce can be more readily accessible to residents of this area.

Desired Effects: The construction of primary roads is consistent with Pillar III under Economic and Social Development and has been identified by the Afghan National Development Strategy as key to improving rural livelihoods and reducing poverty and vulnerability in rural areas. Additionally, better rural roads will improve market access and opportunities for rural households.

Measurable Effects: Villages and communities located in the more inaccessible regions of Afghanistan, lacking reliable trade routes, have little interest in the cultivation of cash crops and typically suffer from greater-than-average percentages of poverty, illness, and ignorance. The development of primary and "farm-to-market" roads in these areas typically provide an 80% irease in market accessibility, trade opportunities and create incentive to produce growth-market goods for export and trade resulting in economic "micro-booms". Post-construction the average household experiences a 50% bp in income within the first two years and, with proper encouragement, a 200% irease within five to ten. In time this economic prosperity can generate a four-fold increase in general trade opportunities and results in significant reductions in poverty, poverty-related illnesses and secondary-school dropout rates.\

Results

Project is 100% cmplete and roadway is open for use providing corridor for travel to thousands of Afghans.
