Project Description
There are no improved roads that run East to West in the Malajat area. The Malajat area is made up of 38 villages. The hundreds of families located within this area are dependent on crops such as corn, onions and alfalfa. These crops, which are spread throughout the Malajat area, support thousands of the local Afghans. For many years these farmers have had no possibility of moving their goods to local market areas aside from using a network of degraded roads and trails and had to expend substantial effort in getting fertilizer and seed to their crop areas. Significant portions of the current road are inadequate for larger agricultural trucks to pass, requiring manual labor to move fertilizer and seed, and do not provide a safe means of travel for the residents. The local residents originally approached U.S. Forces about the lack of needed transportation throughout the area.
Project Goals
The intent of this project is to afford the locals with a usable route for both commercial and residential transportation throughout the Malajat area. The result of restoring transportation to the 38 villages will not only greatly expedite travel and the shipment of goods but will also effectively tie the villages together and link them to outside communities. The proposed road will run east to west approximately 200 meters south of the existing network of an unimproved, narrow road and trails. This is designed to serve as a bypass for larger vehicles and increased traffic flow in the area. An attempt to restore the existing primitive roadway for agrarian trucks and traffic would encroach upon homes and compounds, requiring their destruction or relocation. The path selected for the route was based on minimizing any negative impacts to existing villages and homes, as this was a priority of the local residents. This route will greatly benefit the villages in the area and restore meaningful transportation to the many residents. Restoring transportation throughout this area will have a positive effect on local agriculture and commerce, as well as allowing the Municipal Government to extend its capacity into this large area bordering Kandahar City. The road will also open transportation for the local residents to the larger village of Zor Shar. This road is being designed to serve as a functional thoroughfare for the transportation of agrarian goods to markets and to other villages within the region. With the absence of a useable throughway, the current village inhabitants are limited in their abilities to efficiently transport their crops to locations outside of the immediate vicinity of their villages. This project will effectively reopen transportation for a community comprised of 38 separate and distinct village communities and be a significant factor in ensuring their economic vitality. Further, restoring transportation will allow for greater access to medical care, police, education and the Municipal Government by the local residents, thereby building the relationship with the local villagers and their government representation. Comments: The primary benefits of this road project include providing the local populace with a functional thoroughfare for the transportation of agricultural goods and services to the local market. Commercial viability is important to the overall stability of the 38 villages located within the Malajat region. Constructing this road will have a positive effect not only on commerce, but also allow the Municipal Government to extend its capacity and operational reach into a large area bordering Kandahar City.
