Project Description

Rebuild a bridge over the Konduz River

Project Goals

The goal is to rebuild the dilapidated Kona Qala Bridge over the Konduz River to allow the people in a virtually inaccessible area of Baghlani Jadid to better access the local markets.

The 140 villages in the area of Kona Qala and Gerdab have historically been neglected without any development efforts. The result is a economically deprived group of 140 villages without proper access to the main route leading them to the markets of Konduz, New Baghlan, Old Baghlan, and Pol i Kumri. The existing bridge is on the verge of collapse and the only secure access across the river is a boat upriver that is attached to a line to transport passengers.

The area is known for its fruit. Unfortunately, due to the inaccessibility, many of the villagers resort to theft due to their inability to access the various markets that will, with the bridge, be open to them.

Due to the difficulty to access the villagers, the education system and basic infrastructure is poor. This bridge will completely open up the area, leading to a greater development effort and eventually lead to a more advanced, prosperous area.
