Project Goals

This project supports Kabul/capital region of Afghanistan through;

a. Expansion of accountable governanace to allow for economic growth, improved services, and infrastructure.

b. Increased market access for local populace by extending business hours on one of Kabul's busiest streets, create jobs through "a new nighttime commerce", increase sales and help boost the economy.

c. Creating sustainable jobs (solar lights) by addressing the immediate urban challenges of Kabul exponentially growing population by providing jobs for the urban poor and addressing urban renewal/beautification.

Steet lighting will support economic development, civilian movement, security, and emergency response impacts. Moreover, street lighting may decrease crime by increasing community pride and 'informal social control' rather than just increase surveillance and deterrence.

We took reasonable measures to ensure other aid and reconstruction fund (local, national, donor nation, NGO or other resources) are not available for this project through the Kabul City Infrastructure Working Group. At regularly occuring meetings, projects are discussed and prioritized to minimize duplication of efforts from the various donor agencies.
