Federal health inspectors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention inspect cruise ships twice a year, checking everything from kitchen equipment to dishwasher temperatures, and grade ships based on what they find. A score below 86 is considered failing. Cruise ships are also required to report all illness outbreaks affecting more than 3% of passengers or crew to the CDC. Inspections and outbreaks from 2010 to the present are shown below.

The pool water was very cloudy at the time of inspection. The pool was still netted and closed to passengers. Ship staff said they were a day past their normal schedule of emptying the pool, cleaning and refilling. This will be done, as well as changing the cartridge filters before placing it back in service.

The transfer carafe of milk in undercounter cooler EC 3.1, that was on temperature control, at the front bar did not have a discard label for 7-days (or the normal HAL standard for 5-days).

A Stateroom Attendant had an onset of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) symptoms on 1 March at 11:30, but did not report to the medical center until 16:30. His time card indicated he worked 12:00 - 14:00. According to the staff, the food was measured at the outer edge of the pan instead of at the center. The food was reheated and cooled correctly.

The dates on the AGE surveillance log alternated between the U.S. calendar date format (month/day/year) and the European calendar date format (day/month/year), making it difficult to interpret.
Medical-Crew Member Reporting
During the 3-13 February 2012 cruise, a General Purpose Attendant (GPA) assigned to the bars had an onset of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) symptoms on 8 February at 0600, but did not report to the medical center until 1615. According to his time sheet, he worked from 0730 to 1300 on that day. An Assistant Cook had an onset of AGE symptoms on 9 February at 1100, but did not report to the medical center until 1635. During the 12-23 December 2011 cruise, a Mess Attendant had an onset of AGE symptoms on 20 December at 1100, but did not report to the medical center until 1615. It could not be determined if either the Assistant Cook or the Mess Attendant worked while symptomatic because of the company's new time and attendance management program.
